Malcolm Todd is undeniably America’s darling, though the Aidan Cullen-directed visual for his latest single “Breathe” takes our collective infatuation to uncharted heights. Kidnapped by three beautiful fans who torture him with adoration, he is bound against his will and exactly where he wants to be.

Co-produced by Todd, “Breathe” is the California native’s first new single to kick off his new era since his fame has exploded globally. Yet, even after a sold-out international headline tour and hundreds of millions of streams, he maintains a humble innocence. He’s a 22-year-old boy experiencing it all with wide eyes and a full grin, never too far from the rabid inner child within.

But even a wondrous child-like essence can’t eclipse the sensual nature of “Breathe,” a song that longs for an intimacy so deep it’s almost possession. It’s an airy, alternative R&B ride that floats by quickly and demands to be looped every time. The visual, featuring choreography by Lexee Smith, gorgeously encapsulates how bright yet drenched in allure the song feels.

What makes “Breathe” so infectious is how much fun Todd is letting himself have, not weighed down by the inevitable pressure of upholding his momentum. His fan base has proven their unwavering devotion to Todd lies in his wholesome authenticity, therefore there’s no schtick necessary to maintain. Offering the first glimpse of what comes next in this developing era, his sonic maturation is an exciting one to watch unfold.
