Maude Latour Dances Through the Unknown Chaos of "Probabilities"

As we emerge into a more reflective phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, artists are grappling with lockdown hindsight and exploring what we lost during the omnipresent experience. For Columbia student turned pop star Maude Latour, this exploration manifests in the lyrics and danceability of her latest single “Probabilities.”

For young people, particularly students with plans of college or post-grad life, lockdown put a big question mark on an already intimidating juncture. Latour knows how that felt (and still feels) first-hand, which is what makes her the perfect voice for a track like “Probabilities.” Although we’re still experiencing the devastating effects of the pandemic, Latour chooses to make an optimistic statement on the confusing passage of time and uncertainty young people have come to live with. This optimism shines through, not only through the positively poignant lyricism but the celebratory sound and infectious dance beat.

“Probabilities” acknowledges the listener’s experience while simultaneously inspiring a newfound sense of hope. Latour sings in the chorus, “Baby, don't be scared / I can tell the future's bright,” in a way that makes you believe it. The satisfying choice of autotune is a playful addition, elevating the already powerful track.

Most importantly, “Probabilities” asks questions and answers them in the same breath. Latour reflects on the confusing notion of aging during a pandemic in the opening line, “Weren't we just nineteen? / It was sophomore spring / Now I'm twenty-three / I'm feeling everything,” and by the second verse, she puts her maturity on display. When she sings “Play that song from high school / Class of '17 / We used to scream all the words / Now I know what they mean,” she proves that no matter how stunted she may feel, there’s undeniable proof of growth.

In “Probabilities,” Maude Latour urges listeners out of their own negativity and invites them to dance through life with her, no matter how scary it might be. It’s a contrast from some of her previous releases, which rely on heavy lyricism and witty metaphors. This time the songwriting is succinct, the discussed experience is more universal, and acceptance of the unknown leads the way. “Probabilities” is a beautiful snapshot of real life, showcasing a rising star's talent and unique perspective.
