Maude Latour Captures the Unbridled Joy of Friendship in "Too Slow"

Maude Latour is a pop star in every sense of the word, a star in the making with the ability to transcend what could be perceived as a simple bop to something more profound than you’d ever expect. Her imaginative new single, “Too Slow,” is the first taste of a long-awaited debut album from the rising star. The spirit of youth seeps through every Latour song and this explosive anthem takes it to the next level by grounding itself in the high school experience.

Incorporating signature Latour elements like her electronic sound and kitschy production choices, “Too Slow” is a full experience of her artistic journey thus far. This true pop song is much more than just fun; it’s about the pure anticipation you feel as a teenage girl getting ready to go to a party with your friends. What may seem like an insignificant act to some is actually sacred, and in “Too Slow,” Latour captures that energy in both spoken and unspoken ways.

The track takes listeners on a journey of sonic peaks and valleys with an abundance of details sprinkled in between. The chaotic yet carefree nature of the production mimics the seemingly adolescent invincibility being channeled in “Too Slow.” Latour’s vocals go from sultry to cheeky to full-on cheerleader, singing lyrics clever enough for her caliber of songwriting but campy enough for the blissfully ignorant nature of the track.

At its core, “Too Slow” is about Latour’s “life-long muse” and the most frequent topic explored in her discography—the intimacy of friendship. Previous songs like “Walk Backwards” and “Lola” insist that platonic love is as important as romantic love, which is only furthered by the potent feeling of feminine friendship being described in “Too Slow.”

Latour sent fans an email detailing the inspiration behind the single saying, “I think the most invincible I have ever felt is getting ready for the party with my friends. It’s mixed with possibility that anything could happen and the utter desire to freeze time and live in that bedroom forever... It’s the unfortunate truth that we need to exit said bedroom in order to experience the world.”

“Too Slow” is a spell for summoning that magical feeling of being on the way to the party, when reality isn’t relevant and you’re surrounded by your best friends. After graduating and growing up, it feels increasingly harder to capture, but lucky for us, it was never really about the party. Friendship is the key to the unbridled energy Latour conjures in her music and with “Too Slow” being the first taste of her debut album, we’re sure to be in for a treat.
