For cultural polymath Michaël Brun, borders and boundaries are but lines to cross to better the music, the culture, the vibes. Famed as a producer for mining the music melange of his Haitian roots, Brun has become both a symbol of the island's diaspora and a scythe through dance culture norms, all for the better. Wanting as always to know more about his latest release FAMI SUMMER Caribbean culture and what to eat at the next cookout, we reached out to this music bon vivant to learn more.

Ones To Watch: Who is Michaël Brun?

Michaël Brun: A music producer and DJ from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. He’s also half-Guyanese.

What is FAMI Summer all about?

My Caribbean roots. I wanted to make a project that links all my favorite sounds and cultures.

As a multi-lingual, cross-cultural artist, how do you settle on your sound choices?

If it feels right, I do it. I really believe in intuition.

Favorite memory from making the album?

Recording the very first take of Jessica with J Perry at my apartment in NY and then sharing it on Instagram unedited. That video ended up getting 250k views and made me realize there might be something special with that song.

How do you feel your sound has evolved or changed since Lokal?

I’ve produced a lot more songs for other artists around the world so my influence range has widened even more. I feel like I become a better producer with every new collaboration.

Can we expect more of this style in the future, possibly a full-length album?

Definitely.

Besides this excellent EP, what else should we be on the lookout for?

Expect the unexpected. Block parties around the world, multi-medium collaborations, and new productions for other artists.

What’s inspiring you right now outside of music?

Food and travel! I love to experience culture.

Must try Haitian food?

Fritay (Banan Peze, Akra, Griot, Pikliz).

Who are your Ones To Watch?

I’ve been listening to this artist called Monsune from Toronto. His EP is a masterpiece but it looks like he hasn’t released very much since the pandemic. I hope he comes back soon because he’s one of the most complete new artists I’ve heard in a long time.

Michaël Brun's FAMI SUMMER is available now.
