Orson Wilds Offer Up a "Cellar" For the Stormy Weather Ahead in Latest Single

Toronto indie rock band Orson Wilds returns with a bang with the release of their latest single, "Cellar." The high-octane track is full of intense percussion, enthralling vocals, and lyrical double entendres that weave a story that feels sonically uplifting but deeply melancholic upon closer examination.

"Cellar" opens with a whimsical yet haunting combination of strings and piano riffs, luring listeners in before lead singer Eric Reid's intense and anguished-filled vocals join in to paint a story of someone on the run. The bombastic chorus opens with Reid singing, "I'll be your cellar/ if you're looking for somewhere to run." The double entendre for "seller" responds to friends succumbing to addiction, with Reid declaring that he can be where the protagonist can seek refuge from "the stormy weather." Grammy nominee Will Yip and Grammy winners Tom Lord Alge and Emily Lazar help deliver Orson Wilds' trademark sound with elements of punk, folk, and rock to create a sound that is both intimate and expansive.

The two lead singers offer up an enthralling contrast, with Reid's passionate and raw vocals and Brianna Bordhin's smoother, softer tones creating something greater than the sum of its part. The songs often break into gang vocal sing-along choruses that are rounded out by bass player Max Kennedy and percussionist Mark Johnston. As a live act, Orson Wilds, which formed in 2019, can range from six to nine members, including trumpet, saxophone, and violin.

"Cellar" is the band's first effort since their debut EP, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WON'T LET GO?, released in late 2021. The six-song body of work aimed to examine the concept of hope and grief, chronicling the band's experience with loss and trying to remain hopeful.
