Rachel Prancer is Going Anywhere But "backwards" on Captivating New Single

“My name is now Rachel Prancer, and I couldn’t be happier.” This is how Rachel Prancer re-introduced herself to the world. Having previously released her debut EP, Ways Parted, under the name “spiderblush," Prancer realized that she was ready for a new name that represented her better as an artist. Her new name honors her late friend JD and marks the start of a new era for the singer-songwriter.

Prancer released “see through,” her first single under her new name, on August 30th and is following it up with her latest single “backwards.” In “backwards” Prancer reflects on a relationship that has run its course. The song features acoustic guitar and twinkly percussion alongside Prancer’s tender, airy voice. The stripped back production allows for Prancer’s lyrics to take center stage. The song’s chorus is a moment of realization and acceptance for Prancer as she sings, “You don’t like me / And I don't like you too / Why are we fighting / Why are we trying / Some things just don’t work / Although you want them to.” Melancholy flows through the song as Prancer comes to terms with the end of the relationship.

In the lead up to the song’s release, Prancer shared pages from her journal that included lyrics from “backwards” alongside a longer entry that read,

“I admire a lot of things I’ll never have, never be. I write about my regrets, my wishes, my dreams, and I explore everything I don’t understand. I try to learn and grow, but sometimes I let myself take steps backwards. I miss everything, every age I’ve been, every place, every friend I’ve lost or drifted from. These are pieces of art. I’m not always looking back but I think it’s something I rely on too much. Other times, I can’t remember what happened at all. It’s good to look back and learn. I guess I’m still searching for something. Thank you for searching with me.”

Prancer has a way with words and a vulnerability that allows listeners to feel a little less alone as they navigate all the complexities life throws at them.
