The Marías' "Lejos de Ti” Speaks to the Painful Chill of an Absent Lover

If one thing is true, The Marías are faithfully devoted to their Latin fanbase. “Lejos de Ti” is yet another gift to their Spanish-speaking audience, a melancholic plea for a lover far away.

Dreadfully indie, The Marías have managed to speak to the weight of love from every angle and perspective. Whether it’s burning with passion or subtly blooming, they know just how to encapsulate the feeling and deliver it in a flawless, alt-pop bow. “Lejos de Ti” darkens those shades, speaking to the despair born from love’s absence.

The song’s accompanying visual showcases María bare and half-buried in freezing snow, numbed by the pain of her lover’s abandonment. Referring to the artistic nudity, she shares “I wanted my body to represent me being born in a desolate place and experiencing loneliness for the first time.” It pairs well with the song’s frigidity, the shiver that comes with being forgotten.

With the promise of their new album Submarine out May 31, The Marías are entering their blue era, denoting themes of grief and loneliness, as well as hope and rebirth. Navigating new territory, it’s already clear the challenge is only evolving them into an even better band in a brand new chapter of artistry.
