Get To Know Boox Kid in Five Minutes or Less

Tell us all about yourself!

My name Is Jarred and I am a First Nation artist (Aboriginal Australian) of Noongar heritage (specifically Whadjuk/Wadandi Bibbulmen) living in Walyalup (Fremantle). I go by the name 'Boox Kid' and I make dreamy electronic pop.

I’d love to know where the name Boox Kid came from! Is there some history or story behind it?

Boox Kid came to fruition after I followed a desire to go 'solo' and learn production. I always wanted to create singer songwriter style songs with electronic elements, so I watched a lot of videos and taught myself how to use ‘Ableton’. I then needed a name for my solo venture, so I handed the reins to my daughter and she came up with what is now 'Boox Kid'.

What’s the Electronic Pop scene like in Boorloo (Perth) and Walyalup (Fremantle)?

There are more and more acts entering this space and more venues willing to hold events that have artists from the genre. So it's nice that we have this community and willingness from venues.

You’ve probably had many changes to your influences over the years – what’s influencing your music now?

I've always been a fan of singer songwriters like Bowie and Stevie Wonder, whose music is really diverse but driven by melody. I find strong melodies to be featured a lot in my music. From an electronic singer-songwriter perspective though, I’m a huge Miike Snow fan. I love Frank Ocean and I've been listening to a lot of Joji and Still Woozy.

What do you want people to take away from your music?

A lot of my tracks have a deeper sentiment to them but are often juxtaposed by a happy melody or beat. I try to create songs that all sorts of people can resonate with. I don't want them bound to any particular group of persons, it’s for everyone and anyone who wants to listen.

If you were to meet someone for the first time, which song would you recommend them to listen to?

Probably my track 'Wrecking Ball'. It'd be the most personal of songs to me on the current discography and is all about melody. It's also super short, only 2 minutes haha!

Is there anything that has really challenged you throughout your journey? What did you learn from it?

I think I've always struggled to write about personal experiences which Is probably why I write from a narrative. I tend to weave in my thoughts through the story which makes it a little less ambiguous. I should try and switch things up just to see what I can create.
