AG Club Takes Us Back to the '90s With "TRU RELIGION"

Truer lyrics have never been written than AG Club's "Punk Rock, Punk Rock, Punk Rock, Punk Rock, Punk Rock, Punk Rock, Punk Rock, ayy" in their January release "Mr. Put It On." Now, the avant-garde music collective is back with yet another single, "TRU RELIGION," a nostalgic - dare I say - punk rock earworm that has arrived just in time for summer.

"TRU RELIGION" is unexpected in the best way possible. Co-created with Junior Varsity, the track begins with a subdued guitar riff and soft, sing-songy vocals. By the end of the first verse, distortion comes into full effect and amplifies the track from a soulful slow song into a '90s rock anthem as the boys chant, "It feels so good, so good, don't it?" Towards the end of the tune, we hear an electric guitar solo accompanied by a sea of warped synthesizers, concluding "TRU RELIGION" on a much needed cathartic note.

I feel compelled to say that "TRU RELIGION" strays from AG Club's traditional alternative hip-hop sound, but it doesn't; it works to display their versatility as songwriters and producers, proving that they don't need to be boxed into any particular genre. This track is an example of what AG Club does best: they make the music that they feel like making.

Accompanying the release of "TRU RELIGION" is its official music video. Co-directed by members Ivan Collaco and Manny Madrigal, we watch as the guys perform the track in what appears to be the middle of the woods. The drumsticks are replaced with literal brown sticks, the electric guitarist is dripped in none other True Religion, and suddenly, "blank canvases" in the form of bald humans painted in white surround the band as their energy reaches an all time high. The video is beautifully weird, transforming "TRU RELIGION" into a compelling visual narrative that feels lucky to see.
