Indie-pop’s brightest newcomer BIRDEE 王煒 enters 2023 following a highly successful 12 months marked by the release of her debut EP “Can’t be Loved” and widely acclaimed domestic and international performances. Australian born and raised BIRDEE 王煒 channels and blends her lineage of Chinese, Greek and Russian origins to craft her sound and stories. Her signature breezy lyrical style weaves a balance of vulnerability and courage in immersive-pop tunes that resonate with diverse audiences. As an emerging artist, Birdee’s highly successful release “See You, See Me” shot Birdee into the spotlight; the single secured full rotation on Triple J for over 3 months, was played on live television segments and in 2022 hit 100K+ streams. Birdee has also received tremendous support from Triple J Unearthed, 95.5 ROK FM and featured in Rolling Stone and Music Feeds. A sensory artist, BIRDEE 王煒’s music videos and live performances combine her passion for music and movement; her music videos released across 2022 and featured on MTV (including “See you, See me”, “Dorsal Fin” and “Poolside”) demonstrate Birdee’s dance prowess and unique stage presence. As a live act, Birdee is enthralling to watch with her high energy commanding audience attention. 2022 showcased Birdee’s agility as an artist, with her traditional dreamlike tunes juxtaposed with an upbeat electric collaboration “Poolside”. Birdee shares that 2022 saw audiences connect with her emotional growth from the “young Birdee” music student to a globally supported artist, marked by moments of good, bad, euphoria and insecurity as she made the decision to move from her hometown of Parkes in regional NSW to Sydney to pursue her music career. This move, combined with a relationship breakdown, saw Birdee reflect that “it’s okay to experience life on my own and to be truly present with myself. That there is comfort in growing alone and learning without needing anyone beside yourself.” Now 21, Birdee’s music presents points of view and outlooks of life from a unique cultural influence and as a modern face of her generation. Her father was born in Romania and is of Russian & Greek background, his parents escaped communist Romania when he was a small boy. Her mother is of Chinese heritage, born in Malaysia. 王煒 is Birdee’s Chinese name, pronounced Wong Wei; she selected BIRDEE 王煒 as her formal artist name to pay respect to both her English and Chinese names. Birdee works in the Aged Care sector which she finds inspiring and fruitful as she is connecting and learning with the elderly and disabled. To stay grounded in a fast-paced industry she frequently returns to her hometown of Parkes to connect with family and friends. When speaking of her latest music project and what audiences can expect in 2023, BIRDEE 王煒 has shared that “my latest project is my proudest to date. 2022 was a year of discovering myself and learning what I am capable of. This year I am diving in with full force knowing who I am evolving into as an artist. It’s exciting. Expect the unexpected.” 2023 will see Birdee build upon what was a jam packed 2022 schedule. This included a highly successful trip to Europe and LA where she performed 3 x back-to-back performances as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival ‘House Of OZ’ and was awarded a Mervyn Stutter ‘Pick of The Fringe’ Gold Star; several solo shows across the UK and support acts to artists including Cap Carter, Majak Door, GoldFang, Mild Orange, Leisure, NYXEN, Katy Steele, Liyah Knight and RARIA. “BIRDEE王煒’s quickly become a must-hear artist” – Dave Ruby Howe, triple j “Infectious tracks and immersive songwriting” – Rolling Stone AU
