Aidan Bissett's "Out Of My League" Is Your Coming of Age Soundtrack


If you’re a sucker for quintessential, diegesis-based music like I am, then I’m sure more than well acquainted with Aidan Bissett. Originally emerging as a self-produced DIY artist with a predominant bedroom pop sound, things have certainly changed. Nowadays, signed with Capitol Records, the production and intricacies are substantially more fleshed out and opulent. For OG fans of Bissett, the Jeff Buckley-level penmanship that originally vacuumed me into his orbit is still alive and well.

At only 20 years of age, Bissett has been on a musical warpath. His latest offering, "Out Of My League," continues to separate the Florida native from his contemporaries. The melodies on this one are so so good. It feels like it belongs in a Hollywood-Blockbuster coming-of-age film. Tropes of unrequited love have existed since time immemorial within the written word. One of my favorite writers, the late great Charles Bukowski, once said, “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.” With this quote at the top of my mind, Bissett hits the bullseye on the dartboard, utilizing vulnerability as octane to craft a song that possesses the capacity to resonate with anyone and everyone, irrespective of age or background.

We’ve all been smitten for someone who is simply “too good for us.” Sauntering over the perfect levels of bass and lead guitar, with the catchiest hook I’ve heard in the last few months, "Out Of My League," dare I say, just might be a hit. I can’t wait for the day when I stumble into a movie theater, or fire up Netflix, and catch this record serving its true utility, as the soundtrack to a key moment in your next favorite film.
