Carlie Hanson Shaves Off Any and All Labels on the Deb Never-Assisted "Snot"

Rising pop-punk phenom Carlie Hanson's latest single, “Snot,” featuring LA grunge hotshot Deb Never, may just be her most emotionally raw and vulnerable. Following the releases of her previous tracks, "Gucci Knife" and "Off My Neck," Hanson continues to create songs that serve as mission statements for her upcoming, long-awaited album.

The accompanying video, directed by Lucas Chemotti, follows a bathtub-ridden Hanson as she shaves the bleach-blonde locks from her head with an electric razor. “I feel like I’m doing my childhood self a favor,” she says. “There were so many moments throughout my life when people asked, ‘Are you a boy or are you a girl?’ Now I’m showing everyone that I can look however I want - no labels.”

Head newly shaved, Hanson then sits for a scalp tattoo of her mother’s signature, “Jean,” as a touching tribute. “My mom is very cool; she was really pumped about it,” the singer says of the gesture. “Snot” chronicles one of the most challenging moments in her then long-distance relationship. Painting the scene of the tear-streaked afternoon her girlfriend dropped her off at home before she was set to fly back to LA, Hanson uses the experience to dive into new emotional depths about how love can physically and emotionally show its true colors. “You have to be honest at the end of the day,” she reveals.

“Snot” will appear on Hanson’s eagerly anticipated upcoming studio album, Tough Boy, which will be released in early 2022, marking her first full body of work since 2020’s DestroyDestroyDestroyDestroy EP. Inspired by the music of Mac DeMarco, Jean Dawson, Alanis Morissette, Lil Peep, and Frank Ocean, Tough Boy unfolds over 13 tracks, taking listeners on a journey that entwines Hanson’s “pop bitch" goals with her sonic boundary-pushing ambition. Thematically, the album culls from her full, vibrant spectrum of feelings, with each day in the studio bringing out different emotions, unlocking the ability to let her gut guide the way. "I never knew what I wanted to talk about on any given day, but I knew I wanted to tackle my hurt and how I dealt with it,” she shares. “Even though I’m emotionally all over the place, this album let me let it all out.”

The artist will also make her live hometown return on Saturday, November 20, 2022, with a special show at The Cavalier Theater in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
