Dove Cameron Rewrites the Script With "Girl Like Me"

Dove Cameron continues to slay in 2023 with the release of her latest banger, "Girl Like Me." The single acts as a gender-flipped version of the 1994 hit "Girl Like You" by Edwyn Collins and highlights not only Cameron's stellar musicality and biting lyricism but also her perspective on gender roles and power dynamics within relationships.

The track, produced by Evan Blair, is a sultry, high-octane anthem that establishes the rising star isn't playing around when it comes to claiming her power. Cameron croons over a luscious arrangement of synths, lowkey percussion, and gentle guitar riffs, almost like she's luring listeners in deeper and deeper. Then it quickly switches gears when the electric guitar enters after the first chorus, luring us in even more. Her smooth vocals croon, "Handsome, there ain't nothing sexy 'bout a tantrum / And I'm not even here I'm just a phantom / I know I'm putting you on the spot / What do you think, you're ready or not?"

"I grew up listening to the original by Edwyn Collins, and it's been one of my favorite songs since as long as I can remember. I wanted to cover it for ages," says Cameron about the single. "Then one day, we had the idea to gender flip it, or rather, write an empowering response to the original — with a slightly more synth-y club future leaning point of view. This song is what I would want playing behind me in a slow-motion fight scene in the action film of my dreams."

"Girl Like Me" follows her massive 2022 hit "Boyfriend" and other singles "Bad Idea" and "Breakfast," perhaps hinting that Dove might be gearing up for a debut studio album. We can only hope it slaps as hard as the music she's put out thus far.
