girl in red, indie pop’s nominal head of queer anthems and autumn soundtracks, has announced her upcoming album I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! with a striking new single. “Too Much” catapults the artist into an exhilarating refresh, brightening the sound listeners already love. 

The vocal sound of girl in red used to live in an organic world, verging on Florence + the Machine-style rawness. She’d lean into the candidness of underproducing, layering takes and burying them in the ambience of the track. Now, with “Too Much,” girl in red’s vocals are right at the forefront of the mix, adopting a cleaner, crisp pop sound. Although the slightly DIY sound is what listeners first knew and loved of the artist, girl in red’s voice glows in this context, glinting with an emotional range and playfulness we’ve yet to hear. 

Punctuated piano chords join the vocals, along with a driving bass that matches the heartbeat of the kick drum. Altogether, the track has an undeniable pulse, even with the all-too-familiar anxiety seeping from the lyrics. In the opening lyrics, girl in red sings, “Don’t you just love / To kill the light in my eyes / To make me low when I’m high.” She perfectly unfolds that gutting worry of being an annoyance to the ones you love, but keeps the overall energy lighthearted with the production. Cinematic hits accentuate the second verse, like sunny stabs of sound. There are even hints of emo as the track builds up, welcoming gang vocals and electric guitars into the bridge.
