An ode to the ‘80s, hemlocke springs is making pop quirky again with her newest single “Girlfriend,” the retro love song TikTok is already obsessed with.

Fueled by experiment and eccentricity, North Carolina’s hemlocke springs is free and in full bloom. The 23-year-old songstress was awarded Best New Artist by Pigeons & Planes with only one single out, garnering over one million streams, and receiving a cosign from Bella Hadid and Grimes herself. There isn’t much more necessary to prove she’s a musical magician who is still teeing up her big trick.

Springs is a fairy-like creature, soaring to great heights by residing in her pure innocence. She’s not in pursuit of fame for the desperation of being adored, nor is she pretending to be sure of what she’s doing. Her TikTok showcases the awkward and unglamorous reality of building a musical career in the digital age, making her feel like our best friend. She sings about a love she has yet to taste, and gives life to the music we hear in our hearts while we dance in the shower. What we cower from, Springs accentuates.

“girlfriend” is a track that grooves through you, inviting your body to set itself free and lock lips with fantasy. It sounds nothing like what’s expected of burgeoning pop artists, which honors how unique its singer is. Charming and human, hemlocke springs is doing it her way.
