Kacy Hill Makes Uncomfortable Self-Discovery Sound Heavenly in "Listen To You"

Ethereal singer-songwriter Kacy Hill focuses on reflection in her newest single “Listen To You,” a brutally beautiful recognition of self-worth. Following the release of the previous and similarly highly contemplative singles, “Frog Rinse” and “No One,” taken from her upcoming 2024 album, Hill is building the groundwork for a project set to explore the uncomfortable parts of self-discovery. Through her candid songwriting, Hill is ready to face these truths head-on in order to emerge with a more connected perspective.

Although “Listen To You” contains lyrics heavy with disappointment, there’s an airy feeling at the core of the song. Achieved by combining groovy instrumentation with Hill’s signature delicate vocals, the track is akin to a light shining through the darkness. With an angelic tone in the chorus, Hill sings, “I’m playing the years back over and over, to find when you stopped trying to win me over” and repeats the song title to represent where this relationship has culminated. As she repeats, “I cannot listen to you now,” so many details are revealed through the simplest of phrases. Hill describes a viscerally relatable moment of realization that someone who you once felt safe with and appreciated by no longer gives you the consideration you deserve.

Listeners will most likely pick up on a subtle but celebrated country twang, a carry-through from other previously released singles, hopefully indicating a sonic theme for the upcoming project. In this track specifically, the sound complements the melody tenfold and emphasizes its breezy tempo, perfectly juxtaposing the heartbreaking lyrics and playing into a country staple of romanticizing melancholia. Paired with Hill’s uniquely angelic vocal performance, it’s a match made in heaven.
