10 Questions With Luna Li on Her New Single "Confusion Song" and More [Q&A]

Nothing is confusing about Luna Li’s appeal, a gracious singer and performer, her consciously aware lyrics and counter-conventional approach to pop have made her a staff favorite for some time. In "Confusion Song," the depth of her music continues to expand, less ethereal diverting to a more glossy sound but still hiding all the gloomy details within. Per our usual, we wanted to hear from the act herself and reached out to see what else is in store.

OnesToWatch: Who is Luna Li?

Luna Li: Luna Li is the public-facing, creative and musical side of me! It’s nice to have a little separation/privacy between Hannah and Luna.

What is "Confusion Song" all about?

"Confusion Song" is about the post-breakup haze when it seems that your subconscious and body are in denial about this person no longer being in your life.

We love how bright and optimistic the song sounds, is this a purposeful contrast?

I generally tend to go the route of bright sonics/sad lyrics; it just comes out that way! With this new music I’ve been trying to create music that feels good to listen to but is also lyrically honest.

Any collaborators? Who produced the song?

I wrote the instrumental to this song with Scott Zhang aka Monsune and we co-produced it. The opening keyboard riff is an interpolation of a classical piano piece I learned when I was 10, Prelude in Db major by Gliere.

We haven’t heard from you in a minute, do you feel your sound has evolved or changed at all?

I definitely feel like these new songs are a big step forward from the sound on Duality. Sonically, it feels bigger and more polished, and lyrically more mature.

Can we expect more of this singles style in the future?

Yes, I have more songs coming very soon! This is the most R&B-leaning song on the record, but it definitely feels cohesive with everything else I’ve been making.

Besides this excellent drop, what else should we be on the lookout for?

My sophomore album When a Thought Grows Wings will be out on August 23rd! In the meantime, there will be a couple more singles leading up to the album’s release.

What’s inspiring you right now outside of music?

Novels (specifically I was reading The Overstory by Richard Powers and 3 Body Problem by Cixin Liu while making this record), spending time outside in nature, swimming, and the deep love I feel for all the incredible friends and family I have in my life.

Best place or activity to properly appreciate "Confusion Song? "

Dancing in your room in your comfiest, baggiest clothes while listening on headphones!

Who are your OnesToWatch?

Mother Tongues from Toronto—some of my best friends making the coolest psych music.
