Lyn Lapid Traverses to the Other World in "Coraline"

Moving to a new city means putting yourself out there and meeting new people. A party invite comes in, you put on your best outfit, and head out into the night full of excitement. Fast forward to the middle of the party and you find yourself alone on the couch wondering why you even bothered to come in the first place. Lyn Lapid’s latest single “Coraline” dives into the loneliness that comes with finding yourself in a new place.

The single opens with distorted guitars, immediately setting the tone for the song. Driving drums are present throughout the songs, reminiscent of a pounding heartbeat, adding to the panicky feeling that Lapid describes in her lyrics. In the chorus, Lapid sings “And now I feel like Coraline / Everywhere I go / Nothin' feels like home,” The chorus and song’s title reference the graphic novel and movie Coraline, where a young girl travels through a door in her new home to another world that is similar to her own but seemingly better. As the story continues, Coraline discovers that maybe things aren’t as good as they seem.

The song’s accompanying video features various scenes of Lapid alone at a house party. In some moments, she sits in the middle of a couch while the people on either side of her talk to people off-screen. In other scenes, she’s on the dance floor, still alone, with groups of people dancing around her. The lighting alternates between a moody blue and purple, and a warmer red-orange, eliciting the complex feelings of both sadness and anger that come when you’re alone at a party. When announcing the single’s release on X, Lapid also wrote “hope you’re ready to begin the LL1 lore,” and we are ready.
