For fans of bubblegum pop rejoice, we’ve found a new obsession for your listening pleasure. Meet Miso Extra, Japanese-British singer and producer finding catharsis through bouncy beats and her infectious love of music. Her debut album Earcandy lives up to its title, providing 12 tracks of pure sweetness perfect for any pop music connoisseur. We caught up Miso to capture the emotion of releasing her debut album, what earworms she’s loving at the moment, and how Earcandy was born:

OnesToWatch: This project is such a beautiful mix of genres and sounds, how do you curate your sound? What inspires you the most?

Miso Extra: There are technical considerations that keep it coherent for sure such as keeping certain instruments consistent and making sure to apply my vocal chain across the songs. I draw inspiration from all walks of life.

Tell us about your process, how did this album come to life?

I spent the last year or so exploring working with other people in various studios in London and saw it as something of a side quest to make demos and follow my curiosity for music making.

You’ve released a couple of tracks from this project in advance, including the amazing single “POP” - how do you decide on which tracks to present to listeners first?

I have an amazing team, we spend a lot of time discussing these sorts of decisions.

The title Earcandy could not be more appropriate for this record - what are some of your favorite earworm pop songs?

I’m really loving “Headphones On” by Addison Rae at the moment.

In the same vein, how precious are you with tracklisting? Tell us about the order of the songs on the album.

It’s a very deliberate decision and is designed to take the listener through a journey of discovery. A long conversation that takes a moment to get to the heart of the issue before finding resolution. “POP” is the fun and bubbly naive projection before we then explore deeper with songs like “Ghostly” and “Done” then eventually reaching “Earcandy”.

Tell us about a new, not previously released track, that you’re super excited for listeners to hear.

“Playboi” & “Done” they’re so sumptuous.

You collaborated with artists like DJ Boring, MICHELLE and Metronomy - tell us about the collaborative experience and what they brought to this record

They helped me become aware of how to construct songs and work collaboratively. Exploring new sonics and developing my confidence.

What main feelings do you want listeners to take away from their listening experience of Earcandy?

Unabashedly enjoying listening to music.

You only release your debut album once, how are you feeling that your first full body of work is about to be out in the world?

Terrified and elated.
