NIKI's "Blue Moon" Conjures a Story of Love and Heartbreak Written in the Stars

If you squint and tilt your head only slightly, you can look to the stars to decode all of life’s subtle tragedies. Either a way to cope or a last clinging to hope, NIKI begs to know if the end of her relationship was a fated twist all along on “Blue Moon.”

Indonesian singer-songwriter NIKI has never shied away from pouring her truth into her work; in fact, it’s kind of her superpower, which has conjured her a devout following of girls who too live their lives wholeheartedly. “Blue Moon” is no exception, displaying the emotional remnants of a four-year relationship abruptly collapsing for the world to see.

If an end were truly destined, there’s nothing you could do to save it. And if losing them were written in the stars, it only then begs the question, would you do it all again anyway? “Maybe I’ll give you a call when I turn 32” is a dagger that cements this stunning pop ballad, as NIKI still chooses to hope amidst mourning. Astrologically, blue moons signify a rare yet spiritually heightened occurrence, like the coming together (or pulling apart) of two karmic souls. If the universe strung them together once, who is to say it couldn’t happen again?

Reflecting on the single, NIKI shares, “I wrote ‘Blue Moon’ lamenting the slow, then sudden demise of a truly significant relationship. It’s about the deepest and rarest of loves we might stumble upon (once in the bluest of moons, if we’re lucky), and then realizing we’d stumbled upon it too early for it to stand a chance."

“Blue Moon” is the latest to come from NIKI’s upcoming album Buzz, due out August 9. And with a tour this fall spanning across North America, Europe, the UK, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, this next era is slated to be her most monumental yet.
