Phoenix James Bares Her Soul in "Nothing Matters"

Emerging artist-producer Phoenix James has married all the glimmering bits of alt-R&B and indie pop to produce a sound that pours from the soul. Her latest offering, “Nothing Matters,” is an atmospheric drifting, solidifying her artistic promise as she makes a comfortable space for herself in the industry.

Anyone who has survived long-distance love knows that the quiet of their lover’s absence can calcify into a very physical pain, as longing chokes the air out of your lungs. With nothing but softly plucked guitar and ambiance as a cushion, James’ glass vocals speak to this very suffering with nothing but high regard. “Nothing Matters” is the reminder that a love worth aching for is a love worth fighting for.

“It’s about the ache of separation, the way physical space starts to erode emotional closeness,” the Miami-bred, NY-based songstress says of the track. “There’s still love there, but it's under pressure. The song is a slow exhale, remembering a version of love that felt easier. It’s a song about longing, but also about the kind of love that still makes everything else fade away.”

Pulling from her own experience, as new cities and unfamiliarity wedge distance between her and her heart, that waning hope has been alchemized into music that every lover can see themselves in. With the promise of new music to come, James is devoted to realizing her destiny as the industry’s most exciting fresh talent.
