Rewind: Our 5 Favorite Music Videos of the Last Week

While it’s far too easy to lose ourselves in the deluge of new music releases that grace us every week, one thing that cannot and should not be overlooked is the art of the music video. With the heyday era of MTV long behind us, Rewind sees us taking a look back at a handful of our favorite music videos of the past week.

Surya Sen ft. MAFRO - “Care Less”

Late to this track, to these very London vibes, to this party, sure. But thanks to an early '90s glitch house sound, full retro swagger fits, I get the sense Surya could care less so long as we jump in on this, get in the whip, be expressive, and quit listening to the negativity. Instant visual upside above.

Sad Night Dynamite - “Sick Of Your Sound”

You’d be forced to wait a long, long time for this Sad Night Dynamite to get lazy, both in sound and visuals, and that wait continues after the release of this fantastically composed video for "Sick of Your Sound," directed by Will Hooper. Taking the juxtaposition of corporate conference goers and having them manhandle to-head popping asphyxiation, this video has a dream state resolve, but like everything this fabulous imaginative group does, you better be paying attention till the end.

Highway - “B&W”

In trippy, post-dramatic fashion, Highway is making room in a very congested lane, taking a realistic and artistic flourish to a genre often bare and lacking of emotion. Staying true to the moniker in monochromatic detail, this effort by director franklinspov, lets the curvy silhouettes, moody murder room settings, and distortions bring this very stark track to light. To see into the dark and feel its embrace watch above.

Wakai feat. Femdot & Flozigg - “Collect Calls”

Two great forces merge on this wonderfully poetic video directed by Wakai. The first being a love of storytelling with tight visuals that very much emulates his narrative flow and the second being a great appreciation for cinematic reduction, letting less happen to give nuance, light, and meaning to each shot and scene. Aided by Avery Joseph, shot and edited, this level of storytelling, a story of macro social angsts, mixed with the inter personal micro ones, is gorgeously shot and composed, rife with imagery that is as sticky to the underlying track. Answer the call.

Fake A Smile - “Don’t Stop”

There is a lot to love about this nascent band, but their visuals equal their scrumptious, crunchy, retro sound in their deft construction, evidently unfazed by any budgetary restrictions, making them that much easier to love. Director and editor Somerset Phaedrus uses the starkness of black and white and pars it with a stark suit and tie costume, clearly reveling in sharing a compelling  visual without much clutter. Watch to get a little more obsessed.
