Royel Otis ushers in a new era with the release of their much-anticipated new single, "moody." A lilting cut with an infectious hook and effortless late '90s slacker groove, "moody," according to the Australian duo, is "a song about a girl" boasting sonics that can best be described as an indie daydream.
The single is an emotional journey, as the singer grapples with the flaws in his relationship. Vocalist Otis Pavlovic starts with his "good intentions," a poignant beginning that sets the tone. The first verse unveils some points of tension, leading to the realization that he's "in the doghouse again." The singer's inner conflict about the relationship's future becomes more pronounced as he enters the chorus.
As the song continues, Royel Otis describes a protagonist who is always on defense, making up excuses for their poor behavior. Continuing to overlook the tension, the truth is that the lovers may not be as right for each other as they once thought. The love of a significant other will have its times of moodiness, but nevertheless, the love is still there for that person even when "big emotions" are present. "She's all that need," he croons, confessing in the song's last line, "Sometimes more than I want."
The visualizer, directed by Adriane Neshoda, plays a crucial role in enhancing the themes of the single. It depicts a woman reading a book, drying her clothes, and sitting underneath a sprinkler. This visual narrative fully encapsulates the essence of the single, adding an intriguing layer to the listening experience.
Along with their new single, Royel Otis also announced a new tour, the 'meet me in the car' tour. The 12-date tour will stop in Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, D.C. This summer, the pair will also perform at UK festivals, including Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds.
