Softcult Take Us To "Heaven" On New Shoegaze Inspired Single | THE NOISE

Over the last few years, Canadian twin duo Softcult, Mercedes (she/her) and Phoenix Arn-Horn (they/them), have been building an intricate universe around their art, fusing riot grrrl and shoegaze to call attention to issues about gender equality, sexual assault, domestic violence, climate change, capitalism, and more.

"Heaven" is a classically shoegaze-drenched tune with exciting elements of grunge rock and alternative indie intertwined throughout that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. Carried by gloomy verses and restrained vocals, the instrumentation explodes into something more raucous in the chorus. Lyrically, the track explores the narrative of overcoming dysmorphia and paints the picture of the idealistic utopian future that the two hope will one day be a reality.

"This song describes a world where everyone is accepted for who they are, where one's background or identity does not dictate how they are perceived by society, where privilege and advantages are recognized and shared to build stronger communities and a society that celebrates diversity, difference, and otherness as strengths."

The accompanying music video, directed and edited by Mercedes and produced by Phoenix, is composed of highly stylized black-and-white scenes that are equal parts dreamy and artistic. With footage of religious-inspired cues, burning flowers, and scenes of the siblings singing to the camera soon escalate to fuzzy footage of burning buildings, the moodiness and hope of the track are perfectly captured in this magnetic and dystopian visual companion.

"Heaven'" follows on from their recent drop "Haunt You Still," and is taken from an upcoming EP, which in turn follows on from their recent six-track EP 'See You in the Dark', which came out back in March. 2023 brought Softcult worldwide, including the US, UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Japan. They've supported bands like Movements and Mannequin Pussy, and played SXSW and countless festivals across the UK. Now, they'll bring it back to the US this winter for headlining shows throughout the East Coast. Superbloom and Glixen will support.
