Two of indie-pop’s all-stars, Yot Club and spill tab, have joined forces for a gutting new single, “LAUREN.” The pair graced the same stage at Hinterland earlier in 2023, and have found a seamless fusion of their artistic styles through this song.

“LAUREN” unfolds into a smooth pop track, pairing easygoing drums with lilting layers of harmonies that outline a bittersweet chord progression. spill tab comes in with close vocals, soft-spoken but warm, creating a simultaneously blasé and heartbreaking mood.

Yot Club joins in for the second verse, singing from the perspective of a second character. The artist casts his characteristic fuzz over his vocals, but it takes on a deeper meaning in “LAUREN.” Right before Yot Club’s verse begins, spill tab delivers the chorus, “Won’t you call, won’t you call, want me or not at all?” With the lyrical context, Yot Club’s electronically-filtered vocals feel even more like a response from the song’s subject. It’s like we’re hearing him through the phone from far away or even as a distant memory. This stylistic production choice adds to the emotional tide of “LAUREN,” infusing it with one more layer of subtle melancholy.

Intertwining Yot Club’s artful eye for a bedroom-synth-pop landscape and spill tab’s colorfully emotive vocal tone, “LAUREN” is the perfect collab to send us off into the new year.
