UK R&B and hip-hop artist Col3trane is establishing himself as a name in music that you need to know, one impressive release at a time. The same can be said of fellow UK artist RAYE and GRAMMY-nominated, Los Angeles-based production DJDS, both of which have a long-running list of collaborators that include the likes of Kanye West, Charli XCX, Khalid, Major Lazer, and plenty more. So, once we got wind that these three artists linked up on a brand-new track, it was safe to say we were sold no more than five seconds in.
"The Fruits" sees Col3trane and Raye trading verses of burning R&B precision atop bass-heavy production courtesy of DJDS. Setting the stage with a series of airy, repeated vocals, courtesy of Charlotte Day Wilson, who also had a hand on this impeccable fusion of electronic and R&B aesthetic as a co-writer, "The Fruits" captures the ecstasy of locking eyes on the dancefloor.
As Col3trane steadily moves to the forefront of the track, the production unfurls to reveal the varying intricacies that DJDS has crafted for both the listener and their vocalists. It is a soundscape both Col3trane and RAYE make full use of, as each artist illustrates the distinctive talents that have led them to become two of UK's most promising and sought-out-after acts. "The Fruits" wraps suddenly yet perfectly, as if begging to be played on repeat. With the three-minute collaborative effort finished, one thought comes to mind:a collaboration of this caliber does not come around too often.
