flor’s distinctive penchant for anthemic, emotionally-driven music arrives in stark contrast to their humble beginnings. Emerging out of the small town of Hood River, Oregon, the exhilarating four-piece alternative outfit currently stands on the cusp of what may very well be their breakthrough success.
With the release of their sophomore album, ley lines, flor has simultaneously elevated and honed their gift for fusing atmospheric alternative pop with larger-than-life indie rock. From the very opening moments of “White Noise,” flor expands on this enthralling balancing act, switching between hushed vocals that draw you forth and jubilant bouts of indie rock.
Then again, perhaps this exquisite balance between a sense of musical and emotional intimacy and outright adrenaline-fueled moments of losing yourself should come as no surprise given them themes that surround ley lines. Sing and guitarist Zach Grace spoke on the underlying inspiration behind ley lines, sharing,
“There’s a theory that important places of power like Stonehenge or the Pyramids of Giza are connected by invisible lines. As a parallel, I needed to find my own anchor points for belief and purpose. I realized you can build those roads yourself. Friends, family, and the band are my anchors. The music comes out of the ‘ley lines.’”
Throughout ley lines’ impressive twelve-track run, flor never falls flat. Rather, as the closing moment of the album’s closing track “moonday” rings out, flor emerges out the other side as a band fully capable of creating an atmosphere all their own.
