Everyone’s favorite producer brother FINNEAS makes a long-awaited return to his solo project, with his first release since his 2022 debut album Optimist. “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” doubles as his first single in years and the title of his upcoming sophomore album, which he announced will be released on October 4. The new track embodies the complicated nature of being in love, both quirky and serious in its telling.

The track begins with a slightly off loop and isolated drum, setting the scene for the story about to unravel through FINNEAS’ perspective. Over a bouncing beat that embodies a feel-good attitude, he sings about being in love with someone who drives you crazy and wanting the best for them but not being able to avoid the hurt that comes along with it. The instrumentation is grand, incorporating a whole horn section of trombones, trumpet, and sax. FINNEAS’ clever lyricism is on full display with thought-provoking lines like, “What's gonna help you wake up / Won't help you sleep at night.”

The essence of “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” really shines in its music video, the perfect visual representation of the emotional turmoil FINNEAS muses on. Starring our narrator and his longtime girlfriend Claudia Sulewski, the couple goes through endless scenarios of one of them leaving and the other chasing behind. Each time ultimately ends in the dramatic and humorous “death” of FINNEAS, which brings him back to the same spot each time. This spot is a depiction of the afterlife, which for FINNEAS is a dark room with a horn section playing his song as he realizes the cycle of toxicity he’s in. It’s an alluring representation of the push and pull of relationships, dealing with each other's fears and anxieties but always coming back to the other at the end of it all.

This tease of FINNEAS’ new era is full of personality and intrigue, departing from the previous one but staying true to the solo vision fans fell in love with. “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” is as fun as it is concerning, with its tongue-in-cheek approach to a serious topic.
