Genre Bending Gomeroi Artist Rox Lavi pushes boundaries to find his sound.

"If you like any music, you're gonna like Rox Lavi” - Tait McGregor, Host of Ones to Watch’s First Nations Showcase (Byron Bay, 2025) "

Born and raised in Ipswich and a proud Gomeroi man, Rox Lavi is a musical chameleon of sorts, who finds comfort in experimenting across any and every genre. With his discography varying from rock, pop, hip-hop, indie and everything in between, he finds freedom in fluidity and draws inspiration from the many influences shaping his identity.

“I find myself nowadays just merging everything together. Just one big cauldron pot full of different sounds and I'm just sitting there stirring the pot”, he explains.

With music being a core component of his culture and upbringing, Rox credits this as being what drew him to this pathway. “Whether it be clapsticks, didgeridoos, and just dance in total. So I feel like that even that...It's enough for me to want to have an interest towards music”.

Because of the variety of elements that appear throughout his music, there’s a sense of familiarity when listening. Not familiarity in a predictable way, but in a nostalgic, sun-soaked, memory-filled one. In a time when there's a real longing for nostalgia, Rox Lavi delivers comfort through his rhythmic, thoughtful songs that are both reflective and fun. With comparisons drawn to artists like Dominic Fike and The Kid LAROI, he’s certainly in great company.

As Rox was writing his breakout track ‘Burn My Scars’, he was connected with Australian indie band ‘Sticky Fingers’. In particular, members Paddy Cornwall and Seamus Coyle took Rox under their wing - both now with writing credits on the song and throughout his discography from there on. He recognises the group as the catalyst for the launch of his career, saying: “They actually found me,” Rox says. “When I was living out in the country, they made all of this possible. I recorded Burn My Scars with them, and pretty much every song I’ve released since has been with them.”

Speaking of, Rox released his debut album “Blah Blah about the Blah” in October 2025. Featuring seven tracks that almost sound like they are from different genres, he seamlessly blends them together to convey the same coming-of-age feeling. Straight out of the gate, ‘Pilot’ kicks off the album with heavy drums and strong vocals, then transitions to a skate-like indie-rock on ‘Past life’ through to the club-like pulse of AcRyLiCs, and finally closing with the slower, thought-provoking coastal track Too Gone.

Despite his rapid growth, Rox says his creative approach remains unchanged, enjoying the challenge to match melody to his rhythm. He says, “I never want to be put in a box”.

For an artist so early in his career, Rox Lavi has already made serious waves. With his talent, intuition, and confidence in his sound, it’s clear he’s only just getting started.
