hemlocke springs continues to defy norms and live in sole accordance with her own government in her newest single “sever the blight.”

Taking a pretty drastic pivot after studying bioinformatics at Dartmouth, hemlocke springs has not missed once since arriving on the scene, with singles like “girlfriend” and “gimme all ur luv” earning her millions of streams and unfaltering buzz.

Everything the alt-songstress creates is effortlessly cinematic, and “sever the blight” is no exception. It’s sometimes difficult to pin down the narrative of her songs, as she moves through characters and metaphors like performance art. “I’m not really sure,” the artist shared when asked the song’s true meaning. “What am I even talking about with this?” The track dips into Renaissance themes, playing with fantasy and punishment in a way that feels engaging and theatrical.

What keeps people locked into hemlocke springs is her ability to constantly feed interest. She’s not easily understood and leans into her inner nerd, emphasizing her obscurity and drawing you in closer. The more you try to figure her out, the more enigmatic she becomes, and it stands in contrast to the many pop artists of today that blur into one another.

Not straying far from her gravitational pull to '80s groove, “sever the blight” is a showcase of hemlocke springs’ intellectual genius and experimental bravery, which has become a marker for the burgeoning artist.
