MAY-A Embraces the Rush of a Doomed Relationship in "Your Funeral"

Rising Australian artist MAY-A has dropped her new single, "Your Funeral." The self-deprecating single finds the singer leaning into more alt-pop-based sonics as she unpacks her relationship habits with satirical lyricism flowing above a driving beat.

The single opens with MAY-A divulging her toxic taste in women while thrumming guitars, catchy beats, and pop-infused percussion lay the groundwork for the intensifying track. The artist sings, "Don't know how to take it when she's switchin' up the tempo / Yeah she's gettin' in my mental but I only like what's bad for me." In the climatic choruses, she beats herself up and explains that she always goes for the 'wrong types' of people, warning her lover that being with her will end in 'your funeral.'

"'Your Funeral' is about seeking out the things you know are bad for you because you're a little bit of a sadist," says MAY-A. "It's playing devil's advocate. It's a self-deprecating, slightly satirical comment on not being able to accept the love people want to give you. Hurting people by leaving because you're terrified of them leaving first. The bridge is the core of the song in my eyes. It all feels like a bit of a joke until you get to the middle eight, where it strips down, and the bullshit is cut for a second, acknowledging that 'If you really think that we're suitable, then that's your funeral.'"

The accompanying music video is a fast-paced, high-energy visual that follows MAY-A as she falls in love and wrestles with her demons. We watch her and her new love interest in various romantic, highly saturated scenes, watching them hang out with friends and dance under a bridge. These carefree shots oscillate between MAY-A going in for a kiss and ultimately getting colorful powder blown up in her face and isolated film footage of her having an emotional breakdown in her room.

"Your Funeral" marks the latest chapter in a visionary new era for MAY-A, following the arrival earlier this year of the explosive "Sweat You Out My System." The track saw the Australia-based artist exploring and experimenting with new sounds and sonic experiences. Known as a dynamic and inventive live performer, the rising artist supported 5 Seconds of Summer on their recent Australian headline tour and joined Wallows on the UK/EU leg of their landmark 'Tell Me That It's Over World Tour.'
