Meet 1300, an Alt Hip-Hop Group from Sydney with Their Newest Banger "BANGALANG" [Q&A]

Needing a form of balance to the madness of late and wanting to break bread with some neighbors? At the fun end of the spectrum, and a sure addition to your mental health regime, 1300 is a party in a can, opened in a celebratory thank-god-its-summer moment of excess. 1300 brings their patented energy and vocal talents to "BANGALANG," a song that sounds just like its title. And if you couldn’t imagine how the single looks, it's paired with an excellent video to confirm its fun sound. Wanting to dive into this tune and more, we spun up some prompts for these talented MCs.

OnesToWatch: Who is 1300?

1300: 1300 is an alternative hip hop group from Sydney consisting of DALI, goyo, rako, Nerdie, and pokari. We’re a group of 5 boys with a lot of energy, brotherly love, and we rap and sing about our lives and the world around us in English and Korean. We’re at our best when performing live - you should come check out one of our shows.

Besides being catchy as hell, what is "BANGALANG" all about?

"BANGALANG" is literally a song about bread. The word for bread in Korean is “bbang,” which is where the hook came from. DALI was goofing around in the studio one day, freestyled it, and it just stuck. We rap and chant about our favorite breads. Symbolically tho, BANGALANG is a song about having fun, and not taking life too seriously. Feel good, dance, eat bread.

More importantly, what is behind this wild video?

The video is made by our good friend Raghav at Videohead, who has made all of our music videos. It's a visual manifestation of the intention of the song - that in any of life’s random moments, no matter the setting or circumstance, joy can be found and fun can be had.

Any collaborators? Who produced the track?

Nerdie and pokari are the two members who produce all of our tracks, and we all write our own verses!

How would you describe the genre and style of "BANGALANG?"

BANGALANG is intended to be a summer song. It’s hip hop but it’s unserious, it’s bouncy, it’s something easy to dance around to.

Musically what's on tap?

We all have dramatically different tastes. Some of us like Skrillex, some of us like Taylor Swift. Our tastes combined shouldn’t make sense, but somehow when we all come together it just works.

Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?

It’s really the start of a new era for us. This single is the first of several, leading up to our next full-length album. It’s really a culmination of all the lessons we've learned and how much we’ve grown as artists and people since we came onto the scene.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

We’ve had a chance to travel a bit this year, to India and the US, and met a lot of new people which has inspired us a lot.

Make a meal for the group, what is it and who makes it?

Nerdie is the chef among us. He does good work with meats. It takes a lot to feed five boys.

Who are your  OnesToWatch?

Nerdie is actually part of new project called xiao xiao, an Aussie punk band that’s starting to gain traction - you guys should check them out.
