It’s impossible to fit an artist like DE’WAYNE in a box, but “modern day rockstar” is a close to perfect fit. It only makes sense that this star on the rise was tapped to perform at the recent Glam Slam Benefit honoring Prince, in the company of the legends who created alongside him. We caught up with DE’WAYNE before the show to get all the details, including his upcoming support slot with Lenny Kravitz, his most underrated Prince deep-cut and more:
OnesToWatch: Tell us what inspired your song “Highway Robbery”.
DE’WAYNE: “Highway Robbery” came from feeling like love is one of the most powerful things we have. I wanted to write something rebellious in a beautiful way—choosing love anyway. It’s big glam rock energy, but at the core it’s really about believing in love.
You’re about to go on tour with Lenny Kravitz, how does it feel?
It’s surreal. Lenny Kravitz is someone I grew up studying—the music, the style, the freedom in it all. To share the stage with him feels like a full circle moment, and I’m just really grateful to bring that energy every night.
What went through your head when you were tapped to perform at a benefit honoring Prince?
Gratitude and responsibility. Prince is one of the greatest artists of all time, so I just wanted to show up with respect and passion and celebrate the fearless creativity he represented.
How do you honor these legends while keeping your music modern?
By honoring the spirit, not copying the sound. Artists like Prince and Lenny Kravitz were fearless about being themselves, so I try to carry that forward while making music that feels alive right now.
Tell us a Prince or Lenny Kravitz song that deserves more love.
"The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" by Prince is incredible—such a cool groove and vibe. And from Lenny Kravitz, I’d say "Believe". It’s powerful and really spiritual.
How did you prepare for your performance at the benefit?
I spent time really sitting with the music and the spirit behind it. I didn’t want it to feel like imitation—more like a celebration of the artistry.
What are you wearing and how did you choose your outfit?
I love something bold and a little theatrical—something that honors the past but still feels fresh.
What can we expect in the future from DE’WAYNE?
More music, bigger shows, and a lot more love. I’m focused on building something timeless but very much of this moment.
Give us a recommendation that’s not music.
The book All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks. It’s a beautiful reminder that love is something we actively practice.
Who are your OnesToWatch?
I’m in love with the artist MARIS, Mei Semones and Leon Knight are my faves right now.
