Shoegaze Duo Clarion Find Their Voice On Cathartic Single “Blue Fairy” | THE NOISE

East LA shoegaze duo Clarion is a band discovering their voice in real time, and the most recent outcome of their restless experimentation is Blue Fairy, their new EP out March 27. The title track stands as a stellar example of their shared intuitive drive, a loud, unrelenting anthem that captures a band in the middle of transformation. Rather than relying solely on lyrics, Clarion tells its story through texture and atmosphere, patiently stacking layers of distortion and melody until the song reaches a cathartic breaking point that is explosive and well-earned.

“Blue Fairy” opens with a deliciously chaotic rush. Crashing percussion collides with throbbing bass lines and serrated guitar riffs, immediately immersing the listener in its haze. Lead singer and bassist Saya Oliva’s commanding yet dreamy vocals cut through the noise with a nostalgic ache, channeling the spirit of bands like Sonic Youth, HUM, Julie, and Black Flag without ever feeling derivative. There is a push and pull between fragility and force in her delivery that gives the track its emotional core. Meanwhile, Anthony Sanchez’s guitar work adds a harsh, abrasive edge that sharpens the band’s swirling sound.

“It’s an homage to ‘Confess’ by Fennel,” Sanchez explained in a statement, a sentiment that resonates in the track’s raw urgency and intensity, particularly in its accompanying visual.

Directed and filmed by Jacob Butler, the music video mirrors the song’s cathartic, DIY ethos. Featuring a cameo from touring drummer Javier Flores, the clip captures the band tearing through the track on a stark soundstage, sweat and distortion bleeding into every frame. It offers a striking glimpse into the palpable energy that defines their live shows.

Whether performing on a stage, a backyard floor, in a basement, or even at a Denny’s, Clarion thrives on turning chaos into catharsis. Their unfiltered, enigmatic presence makes them impossible to ignore. With a packed spring schedule of festival slots, headline dates, and support runs alongside Mexican Slum Rats and Panchiko, the duo is set for a breakout year.
