Recently, I had the privilege of seeing The Army, the Navy live. I have been an avid follower of their videos and adored their ability to harmonize and work simultaneously to create truly chilling music. It was nothing short of remarkable seeing this reflected live as well. They were able to transform the small set-up with two chairs on stage into a truly harmonious and captivating performance. So, when I saw that their new EP was releasing, I knew I needed to listen immediately. 

Sugar For Bugs is an enchanting seven-track sophomore EP that brilliantly showcases the creative synergy between Maia and Sasha, an emerging songwriting duo at the forefront of the indie pop scene. With this project, they take a bold leap in their musical evolution, seamlessly merging their distinctive flair for the eccentric with captivating harmonies that pull listeners into a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. Each track is a testament to their ingenuity, weaving lyrics filled with imagination and thought, while crafting music that is both heartrending and deeply resonant, leaving an indelible mark on all who experience it.

The EP’s first single, “40%,” immediately establishes a strong and daring impression. The track is a vibrant fusion of energy and creativity, boasting an irresistible catchiness that pulls listeners in from the first beat. Beneath its infectious rhythm lie sharp and thought-provoking lyrics that invite more profound reflection. Lines such as “Corrupted creatures are creepin in // The first ones to leech get their money spent // They've got some tactical tendencies // and turn into thieves // Just give me my 40% // Look at me go, look at me go go baby // Oooah Ooooah Look at em fold // Look at em fold fold when you” paint a vivid picture of societal themes related to exploitation and greed. 

Among the tracks that indeed left an impression on me were the title track, "Rascal," and opening track, "Sea Legs." These songs showcase a remarkable ability to create melodic harmonies that resonate with beauty and intricacy, offering a refreshing listening experience no matter how many times you play them. The duo's vocals are almost ethereal, reminiscent of sirens, effortlessly drawing listeners in and making it hard to resist the temptation to absorb the entire EP in one uninterrupted session.

Beyond their musical skill, the duo’s second EP is enriched with sharp, incisive social commentary that reflects a deep understanding of contemporary issues. Seamlessly blending thought-provoking lyrics with catchy melodies, they create a powerful fusion that captures attention on both an emotional and intellectual level. The lyrics transcend simple accompaniment to the music; they provoke thought, elicit emotion, and encourage reflection on the themes at hand. With their memorable melodies and keen observations, the duo leaves a lasting impact, ensuring their messages resonate long after the final notes. This EP marks an exciting progression in their artistic journey, inviting listeners to dive deeper into the evolving narrative and emotions behind their music.

The duo captivates audiences with their strikingly unconventional visuals that inspire intrigue and curiosity. Their debut EP boldly showcases an image of decaying fruit, a vivid metaphor for finding beauty in imperfection. In contrast, their sophomore EP presents them in surreal settings, adorned with delicate insect-like wings that evoke wonder and transformation. 

“We came up with these EP names years before some of the songs were even written, and we always imagined them as sister projects” says Maia and Sasha. “Back when we lived in New Orleans, we were constantly surrounded by bugs. Cicadas, grasshoppers, butterflies, cockroaches... I think we naturally developed a sacredness with particular insects which in turn became a source of inspiration in our writing and visuals. The plush, green, bugginess of New Orleans helped us envision what we wanted the world of Sugar for Bugs and Fruit for Flies to look like.” 

This distinctive artistic approach, combined with their infectious energy, places them in a creative realm where few can rival their originality. They have carved out a unique space in the songwriting landscape, appealing to fans who celebrate their vibrant spirit and imaginative expression.
