Wallice Announces Forthcoming EP 'Mr Big Shot' With the Thunderous "Best Friend"

Indie pop artist Wallice showcases her sentimental side in her latest single, "Best Friend." The song is a nostalgic, gritty, and angsty look at friendship and platonic and romantic love, and the complex, often complicated feelings that accompany letting someone go.

"Best Friend" opens with a dreamy blend of sparkling piano lines and soft guitar strums. Wallice sets the tone with her addictive vocals, detailing a scene at a party and wishing she knew how to stop her nerves. Then, Wallice spies someone she used to know in a corner. Tensions sonically build as she explains to listeners, "The worst part of the falling out is that I'm scared to see you/ I don't wanna say hello, but I hate that I need to." As the chorus peaks with crashing percussion and catchy guitar riffs, Wallice questions what to do and why she even came, wondering if she should've stayed home instead of potentially interacting with someone no longer in her life.

"A recurrent theme in my music has been friendship," explains the artist. "I think this song can easily relate to both friendship and the friendship within a romantic relationship. I've had a couple falling outs with various friends throughout my life, I think it's just part of life and growing up. Even though that friendship might not serve you anymore, it's still so easy to reminisce on it and miss it."

The accompanying music video, directed by Anthony Pham and John Merizalde, is a highly stylized visual that captures the complexity of the song's emotions. The opening scene sees Wallice lying on the ground, bathed in a spotlight. Then, as the music plays out and she sings to the camera, we follow her through a montage of atmospheric, retro-futuristic scenes, most notably sitting alone among what seem to be moon rocks, running through hallways, and wearing roses that are set on fire.

The single is from Wallice's upcoming EP, Mr. Big Shot, set to release June 23. The EP is yet another triumph in songwriting, with Wallice giving a masterclass on Gen Z's hopes, dreams, and failures. This also marks Wallice's first new single following "Japan" and her EP, 90s American Superstar, last year. The indie pop wunderkind has swiftly become an artist to watch with her tongue-in-cheek, self-effacing anthems that capture the anxiety of growing up. Wallice is also hitting the road for a string of headline shows this summer which kicks off in Toronto on June 19, with stops in Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and more.
