Monsune (Scott Zhang) is a Chinese-Canadian musician pushing the boundaries of plunderphonics from his Toronto bedroom. His soulful music relies heavily on eclectic samples, drawn from yesterday and today, recontextualizing nostalgic sounds in a modern melting pot of musical influences. His debut single, “Nothing in Return,” was released on a whim in 2017 and is still sitting in highly coveted playlists, garnering millions of streams.
A multi-talented auteur, Monsune directs and produces his own music videos, offering his listeners an inside look into his rich visual identity. His first video for “Nothing in Return,” exhibits his lifelong passions for music and film.
Monsune released a single called “OUTTA MY MIND” in August 2019 with another self-directed and produced video, which received a viral response. Shortly after, he released his first EP Tradition in late September 2019, which was written, arranged and produced by Monsune and mixed by Jeff Ellis (Frank Ocean, Kali Uchis, Omar Apollo) and Mike Malchicoff (King Princess, Yellow Days).
