100 gecs Redefine Holiday Cheer With "sympathy 4 the grinch"

It's finally December (the end of the longest year in history). The glint of ornaments peeks out from behind window curtains. The frantic rush to buy those last-minute gifts begins. A crispness settles in the air, and a new cohort of Christmas songs hits streaming services just in time for the holidays. Among the onslaught of "White Christmas" covers and "Baby, It's Cold Outside" duets, one song stands out in particular: 100 gecs' "sympathy 4 the grinch."

The only things that tie "sympathy 4 the grinch" to the traditional holiday canon are the slightly Christmas-like theme and the manic sleigh bells jingling in the background. In fact, the song is decidedly un-jolly.

On their latest single, Laura Les and Dylan Brady play disgruntled kids who exact their revenge on Kris Kringle after being disappointed by the absence of speakers or an Xbox under the tree. The hook goes, "Never gave me a goddamn thing that I want / I was good every day but he didn't give a fuck / This year, put the top on the back of the truck / Santa's banging on the back of the truck." The melody itself takes after that of "stupid horse," a ska-inspired track off of their debut album 1000 gecs.

"sympathy 4 the grinch" marks the end of an eventful year for 100 gecs. 2020 saw the hyperpop duo sign to Atlantic Records, share the remix album 1000 gecs & the Tree of Clues, and collaborate with Rico Nasty, 3OH!3, and HEALTH.
