Blond in Car Unpacks The Pleasure And Pain Of Loving Someone Who Knows ‘How To Be A Mystery’

Take a trip into Blond in Car’s trippy, dreampop world with new single “How To Be a Mystery,” a song about the dangers of falling for the girl everybody wants.

After realizing she’d never found her true calling, Blond in Car — real name: Robin Schorr — quit her job in the film industry and started writing music. Her songs gained traction, getting added to shows on HBO, MTV, and Netflix, but it wasn’t until a video of her performing song “My High Gummygirl” went viral that Blond in Car took off. Her videos with artists like Debbii Dawson and The Two Lips, plus an opener slot for CMAT have made her a major up-and-comer in the pop sphere.

New single “How To Be a Mystery,” a collaboration with Jack Newsome, is a dreamy, techno-lite pop song with a crisp beat that will get listeners on their feet, built on the strong base of Blond in Car’s signature Omnichord.

Newsome, who the singer first encountered online, “has the kind of voice that I dream about,” Blond in Car told Ones To Watch, adding, “He sounds like pop heaven to me so I knew he would kill on this ear candy pop song.”

The song’s lyrics describe a woman who’s “always got the upper hand” — a femme fatale who stops every party in its tracks, and captures the affections of any and everyone. There’s two sides to that attraction though, as Blond in Car and Newsome ask, “Do you wanna kiss her? // or do you wanna be her?”

Blond in Car revealed that the inspiration for the track was “a Hollywood party where I watched with total fascination as the supermodel Cara Delevingne effortlessly worked the room.”

“She carried herself with the confidence of a person who knew that they could make anyone fall for her - she alone would decide who was interesting enough to be worth her time. I was and still am amazed by what it would be like to be her and what it would be like to love her. How would it feel to fall hard for a person who can have absolutely anyone and anything they want?” she continued. “Seems to me like it would mean a world of ecstasy and pain. So I wrote this song about it.”

However, there’s some danger to loving someone everybody wants. “You’re crazy if you wanna be the one she needs,” the artists sing together. “She’s an expert in how to be a mystery.”

The single is part of the artist’s upcoming album, GLIDER, due out this October.

GLIDER has quite a range of different kinds of songs, with different instrumentation and moods, the only constants being my voice and type of melody writing, and Melina Duterte (a.k.a. Jay Som)'s classy production,” she shared. “I hope that people will discover and fall in love with what we made, and embrace all of the album's different vibes.”

With “How To Be a Mystery,” Blond in Car and Newsome paint a picture of someone we all know (or know of), but turn that portrait on its head by questioning if you’d really want to be with someone who will always be a mystery. It’s something to ponder while you bop along to this vibey pop song all summer long.
