Faye Webster Makes Us Want to Cry...  "In A Good Way"

Two years ago, Atlanta artist Faye Webster was "that white girl on Awful Records." The only indie folk artist on a rap-centric label, Webster felt both like an outsider and an insider to the Atlanta hip-hop scene.

During her tenure on Awful Records, Webster collaborated frequently with label-mate and emcee Ethereal, often lending her voice to his hooks. After releasing her self-titled sophomore album on Awful Records, Webster parted ways with the rap collective in 2018, opting to put out her following record on the Indiana-based Secretly Canadian. Atlanta Millionaires Club, released in May of 2019, was met with critical acclaim and cemented her as the Gen-Z face of folk pop.

Having already shown the world that she has much more to offer than rap hooks, Webster is back with her first release of 2020. "In A Good Way" is a hazy love song lush with syncopated guitar instrumentals and emotive string progressions. She cites both Aaliyah and Angel Olsen as inspirations, which comes alive as the song unfurls, interlacing strands of the former's contemporary R&B and the latter's retro folk.

Jazzy keyboard embellishments enhance Webster's understated vocal delivery, bringing the pensive lyrics to the foreground. When she repeatedly croons, "You make me wanna cry in a good way," in the chorus, it sounds reminiscent of a diary entry, the kind of fleeting contemplation that's never meant to see the light of day.

The accompanying visual, directed by Webster and frequent collaborator Hunter Airheart, features her dancing in a bedazzled dress as smiley-face balloons rain down around her.
