Faye Webster and Lil Yachty Make For a One-of-a-Kind Pairing in "Lego Ring"


Faye Webster has announced her upcoming album, Underdressed for the Symphony, releasing on March 1 via Secretly Canadian, enticing listeners with the lead single, “Lego Ring,” which features none other than Lil Yachty.

“Lego Ring” opens with a spread of signature Webster piano chords, guttingly bright and emotive. A buzzing bass groans beneath the keys, marching beside a steady drum beat and wide guitar chords that ring out and punctuate certain phrases. Then, the groove takes a sudden left turn, lurching into a slower tempo adorned in percussive ghost notes and an entirely new palette of sounds. Lil Yachty enters the track, his voice coiled to warble like a synthesizer, acting as both a vocal harmony and an instrumental counterpart to the sultry electric keys. 

There’s a metaphor in the push and pull between the steady, driving arrangement and this sustained, unfurling B section. Though Webster’s lyrics follow a cyclical pattern, the constant musical shift recolors the words she sings. The “lego ring” goes from being a passive, pensive symbol of yearning to a physical desire, a desperate manifestation of commitment. Lil Yachty and Webster’s voices meld together with a similarly complimentary contrast. Soft, whispery, and tinged with a smirk, Webster makes an earnest match with Lil Yachty’s synthesized, playful tone. 

They lean into this cheekiness in the “Lego Ring” music video, playing through the song in a Guitar Hero meets Animal Crossing-type video game. Lily Yachty takes on the outro, steering us back into a driving groove as we end on a sunnier feel, singing, “My new ring stick like honey… your left hand up in every pic, ‘cause your lego ring is sick.”

Built from Webster’s undeniably distinct sound, now spinning in new directions with the addition of Lil Yachty’s experimental vocals, “Lego Ring” is an alluring step toward Underdressed for the Symphony
