Who Is Sasami? [Setlist.Fm Presents: NEW ARTIST DISCOVERY]

Setlist.Fm's weekly "Who Is" series is an immersive way to expose readers to up-and-coming indie acts that should be on your radar; written by music fans for music fans. Each week we feature an artist and/or band that's making waves in the music world. The "Who Is" pieces are a tell-all of the artist, showcasing everything from music and performance style, to influences and tour dates. This week, we need you to cop singer songwriter Sasami's debut self-titled album, and  here's why.

Hailing from Los Angeles, the 28-year-old multi-instrumentalist was already a seasoned musician before her solo endeavors. She’s lent her (classically trained) hand to plenty of local Los Angeles projects including Dirt Dress, Cherry Glazerr, Curtis Harding, Wild Nothing, Vagabon and King Tuff, among others.

Now that her debut,  SASAMI, is out in the world, via Domino Records, many of her peers, like Snail Mail, Mitski and Clairo, have been endlessly boasting about the release. Her songs are for anyone who is a lover of synth-pop like Broadcast, or darker harmonious bops, as Ashworth creates her own avant-pop world within her diaristic songwriting. The new album enlists help from plenty of buds including Dustin Payseur of Beach Fossils, Devendra Banhart, and French singer Soko within the 16 tracks.

After her album dropped in March 2019, Sasami has taken the world by storm with an extensive tour in support. She just finished up a month-long North American Tour, where she and Snail Mail covered Mitski during her Washington, DC stop. Ashworth is now gearing up for a summer tour, hitting up more cities around the States. That tour will kick off on July 12, which follows her opening gig for Broken Social Scene at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on June 5.
