Rhode Island rapper Khary has come a long way from his days as an intern in the music industry and artist debut in 2016. Yet one very important thing has remained: Khary's undying commitment to keeping things refreshingly authentic and more importantly, weird.

Since his landmark breakout with the  Intern Aquarium  EP (2016), Khary has been anything but idle. Releasing his debut album,  Tidal Graves (2017), sophomore project  Captain (2018), uhhh  EP (2018), in addition to a slew of singles and live performances all over the world. Khary has shown a history of dedication to fine-tuning his sound and message, receiving accolades from the likes of  The FADER , Complex/Pigeons and Planes, and Billboard. Bringing us to the precipice of a new creative chapter for Khary, one that can be described in three words: This Is Weird.

Today marks the beginning of Khary's public descent into the unusual with the video release for "Elmer's" (May 21). The first single off his forthcoming  This EP, the first of a trilogy which will be released over the next two years, the video encapsulates Khary's notorious catch phrase "This Is Weird." The single will be released on all platforms on May 24, but never fear we have an exclusive preview of the visual, directed by Jonathan "J" Benavente, and it's one to get excited about.

The track is a testament to struggling with accepting one's departure from childhood and coming to terms with the understanding that, though the future is unclear, it will be okay. From the get go, Khary hits us with some relaxed vocals in a catchy hook, a nice change of pace for his listeners and a heartfelt opening for a song that hits close to home for so many. "Elmer's" hosts a surplus of allusions to childhood in the lyrics from “Osmosis Jones” to "go fish," and in the visual with images of Khary resting on a wooden swing to him interacting with various toys. Sonically, "Elmer's" is truly musical and not only focused on Khary's killer flow, which makes the track feel especially well rounded. Produced by Mike Irish, there is ample attention spent on the intricate interplay of percussive lines, a variety of timbres from organ to horns, plus harmonies and casual whistling sprinkled throughout the track.

We asked Khary to divulge further on the inspiration for the single:

“My mother likes to say that I have 'Peter Pan syndrome' which means I have a hard time growing up. Not in the sense of maturing but more so accepting that change. 'Elmer's' is a song that reflects that sentiment and dives a bit deeper into that feeling while at the same time reassuring that things work out the way they should. Whether it’s something we’re stuck to or stuck with, we’ll all have to say goodbye to our former selves but it’s ok to cry a little along the way."
