Grunge Duo Solfcult Celebrate Women With Uplifting New Track "One Of The Pack" | THE NOISE

Canadian grunge duo Softcult burst into a joyous celebration of women supporting women in their latest track, "One Of The Pack." On the fuzzed-up rock banger, the band, consisting of Mercedes (she/her) and Phoenix (they/them) Arn-Horn, continue to prove that they ARE the biggest act on the rise in the world of rock, and it's a no-brainer to join "the pack."

The purposeful DIY single opens with whining guitar riffs and heavy drums, throwing listeners headfirst into Softcult's melting pot of shoegaze, grunge, and pop without warning. The vocals throughout manage to find a teetering balance between delicacy and aggressiveness. Softcult literally shouts at listeners not to be afraid of being rebellious or unusual. With loud and distorted lyrics like, "Girl, if you need me/ You know I've got your back/ I hope when you see me/ You know you're one of the pack" in the choruses, we can only imagine how cathartic this will be to shout at the top of your lungs at a show. The track slows, bringing the thudding percussion and electric guitars into a grunge-soaked combination.

Mercedes and Phoenix explain: "When we wrote this song, we wanted to celebrate women supporting women, and of course, that includes POC and transgender women. It's sad that that's something that I feel I need to specify and include in a statement like this, but the truth is there are some TERFs out there trying to exclude certain communities from feminism and even the term' woman.' We pride ourselves on being intersectional feminists, even introducing riot grrrl feminism and activism to the shoegaze community in our own way, and we want anyone listening to our music to know that POC, trans women, and non-binary people will always be a welcome and crucial part of our grrrl gang."

The accompanying music video, directed by Mercedes Arn-Horn, is a soft-focus slow-motion rock-out that stars Ontario performer Miss Conduct. "This song is hopefully one you can sing to your best friend to let them know; 'I know you have to deal with a lot of bullshit from other people, but I will always be here for you. I see you, I'll support you, and I love you.'"

Heaven, Softcult's upcoming new EP, calls attention to the contradiction of a society obsessed with the afterlife. Over its six tracks, Heaven further extends Softcult's eclectic and wide-ranging sonic universe with elements of shoe gaze, grunge, riot grrrl, and pop. With this record, the pair want listeners to imagine a world where everyone is accepted for who they are, where everyone has equal opportunity, where one's background or identity does not dictate how they're perceived by society, and where privilege and advantages are recognized and shared to build stronger communities that celebrate diversity, difference, and otherness as strengths.
